QR codes are everywhere, but not all of them are as innocent as they seem. The new digital threat is called "quishing."
While some QR codes are safe, others can lead you to hazardous sites.
WINK News Security Analyst Richard Kolko offered tips to try to avoid these types of scams.
Before you make a payment through a QR code:
- Make sure the code you are scanning isn't a sticker
- Verify the website the QR code takes you to is legit
- Use the app store when possible
- If you aren't sure a code is legit, use another method to make a payment
This new scam, similar to phishing, serves as a reminder to always exercise caution when scanning QR codes.
