The holiday spirit descended upon downtown Punta Gorda as the city celebrated its annual Light Up the Night event. Streets came alive with vendors, live music, and community members embracing the festive atmosphere.
Hundreds of people gathered for the beloved event, which not only brings holiday cheer but also celebrates the community, supports local talent, and honors those who have given so much.
"It's Punta Gorda's charm. To me, it's probably the best event of the year. Everybody's happy," said Garrett Kizer, chairman of Light Up the Night Punta Gorda.
Attendees enjoyed live music, numerous vendors, and even a touch of snow in Southwest Florida.
"When you get to come to downtown and meet other people and just be a part of something so festive, it just shows how we are just a wonderful community," said Jenny Underhill, a Punta Gorda resident.
"Everybody's so into it. Everybody's so a part of it, and I'm just happy to be a part of it too," said Sophie Clement, a volunteer.
The event featured a grand entrance by Santa and Mrs. Claus, along with a surprise appearance by the Grinch.
"What's your favorite part about Christmas?" asked Emily Tomaziefski, a young resident. "That it's the joy of giving," she said.
A highlight of the night was the Christmas tree lighting, made special this year as the family of fallen Sgt. Elio Diaz took the stage to officially light the tree.
"He deserves it, and so does the family, because we need something to show that. You know, we back all of our police and fire because he's not enough," said Shawn Joannes, a Punta Gorda resident.
Many attendees viewed the event as the perfect start to the Christmas season.
"So this is my beginning of now the holidays are starting, because without this, it's just another day with palm trees," said Underhill.
Event organizers are already looking forward to next year's celebration, inviting those who missed out this year to join in the fun next time.
