FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. (WINK) — More than three years after Hurricane Ian devastated Fort Myers Beach, crews are still working to repair critical infrastructure along Estero Boulevard.
Lee County is continuing a multi-million-dollar project focused on restoring portions of the drainage system impacted by Hurricane Ian’s storm surge while also making pedestrian improvements along the corridor.
“It’s nice to see the beach coming back to life,” said beachgoer Brandi McAdams.
According to Lee County, Hurricane Ian’s storm surge pushed sand into portions of the drainage system beneath Estero Boulevard. Crews are now removing center drain brick pavers and clearing sand from the drainage infrastructure to help restore the system.
“All the sand went into the cracks between the pavers, so what this crew here is doing is removing the pavers and starting to remove the sand that has gone and impacted the drainage system, so that we can restore it back to full functionality,” said Rob Price, Director of Lee County Department of Transportation
Price said the work is critical. “It’s a key primary function of the drainage system of Estero Boulevard,” said Price.
The project also includes sidewalk repairs, ADA upgrades, curb and gutter work and other pedestrian improvements designed to improve safety along Estero Boulevard.
“I do think it’s been a little too long, but nonetheless it does look beautiful down here again,” McAdams said.
Lee County says the Estero Boulevard hurricane repair project is expected to continue through fall 2027.
