Lee County deputies use grappler device to stop suspect after four-day domestic investigation

Lee County deputies used a grappler device Thursday morning to safely stop a suspect’s vehicle in front of the Westbrook Homes community on Three Oaks Parkway off Alico Road, concluding a four-day investigation. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office arrested Ryan Hillaker, who is accused of threatening to kill someone during an argument on Sunday in Estero. Deputies said Hillaker reportedly grabbed the victim’s phone and threw it away when they tried to call 911, then fled the scene of the domestic disturbance before authorities arrived. Fort Myers resident JC Arredondo expressed support for the use of the grappler device in this situation. "If he's personally been specifically avoiding the police. In that case, I can agree with the method that they use," Arredondo said. Arredondo also highlighted the safety benefits of the tool when driving on slippery roads. "It's safer simply because ramming them in a situation like that can definitely lead to some, what is called hydroplaning," he said. The grappler device, which costs $10,000 each, was introduced to the sheriff’s office fleet over three months ago. The technology slides out from a cruiser, latches onto the car in front, and brings it to a stop. In April, Sheriff Carmine Marceno explained the purpose of the device. "Making certain that we minimize the risk for the law enforcement officer and then for everyone else around, if we need to pursue a felon," Marceno said. Since its implementation in April, the sheriff’s office reported at least four successful stops using the grappler. Hillaker is now facing charges of obstructing justice and simple assault.
