A standoff at Green Tee Village Apartments in Fort Myers ended Wednesday with police fatally shooting 23-year-old Aaron Spencer, who had barricaded himself and his mother inside an apartment where another person was found dead. Rosemary Oliver, a resident of the complex, described the tense scene. “I looked to the left. I saw a guy with a machine gun like a SWAT guy. And I thought, uh oh, I’m gonna run in the house. But then I looked to the right, and I seen a guy leaning over a car with the aim and a machine gun at the apartment over here that way,” Oliver said. Oliver said she had gone out for her morning walk with her dog and did not expect to witness SWAT and Fort Myers police surrounding her complex. She also recalled hearing a loud scream from above around 8:30 a.m. The standoff ended with officers shooting and killing Spencer. Fort Myers police confirmed Spencer had a weapon and that someone inside the apartment was already dead. In video footage, SWAT and police can be seen rushing Spencer’s mother out of the apartment. Eric Rodriguez, a construction worker near the scene, said he realized something was wrong when he parked his car outside the apartments. “As soon as I parked, I noticed that there was a police officer coming from the building. And the police officer had a gun in his hand. And he actually told me, 'Hey, you got to move,'” Rodriguez said. “So that’s the first time that I realized that something was going on. So I move out, and I told my workers, 'You know something? What’s going on?' And from there, from the moment more cops were coming and we had to evacuate the area.” Spencer’s siblings said off-camera that their brother suffered from psychosis, a mental health disorder that causes hallucinations, delusions, and confused speech. Fort Myers police confirmed they performed life-saving measures on Spencer, but he died from his injuries. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident, including the relationship between Spencer and the deceased man found inside the apartment.
