1 injured following shooting at Mermaid Liquor Bar in Cape Coral

CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK) —  1 person is injured after a shooting at the Mermaid Liquor Bar on Sunday, according to the Cape Coral Police Department.

A man is facing multiple charges after police say he opened fire in a bar parking lot, shooting another man twice.

Cape Coral Police arrested 47-year-old Dewey Scott Stepp on multiple charges.

Stepp faces six charges, including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, firing into a dwelling or vehicle, property damage, discharging a firearm on public or residential property and improper exhibition of a firearm.

According to a Cape Coral Police Department report, the shooting happened at approximately 1:42 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, in the parking lot of Mermaids Liquor Bar at 111 Del Prado Blvd N.

Officers responded to Cape Coral Hospital at 636 Del Prado Blvd S after Caylen Lopez, 29, arrived with two gunshot wounds.

Lopez told officers he was standing next to his brother-in-law Andrew Friedel's truck when an unknown man began shooting at them.

Lopez suffered a penetrating gunshot wound to his lower left leg, a grazing wound to his left buttocks and a wound to the lower left area of his back.

According to the report, earlier that evening there had been a fight in the bathroom between the shooter and several other people, including Friedel.

Friedel told detectives that the confrontation in the bathroom followed an earlier situation involving the shooter and Friedel's sister, Hailey Smith.

Surveillance video from nearby businesses captured the shooting. It shows the suspect, later identified as Dewey Scott Stepp, 47, firing into the air before approaching Friedel and Lopez, then continuing to shoot as they drove away.

After the shooting, Stepp was seen on camera walking northbound around the building with a firearm in his right hand.

Investigators found 10 spent 9mm casings in the parking lot, consistent with where the victims said the shooting happened.

Forensic specialists also processed Friedel's blue 2002 Chevy Silverado, finding three bullet defects in the vehicle along with blood on the driver's side floorboard, seat and center console.

Stepp faces charges including aggravated battery, aggravated assault, shooting into an occupied vehicle, criminal mischief of $1,000 or more, discharging a firearm in public and improper exhibition of a firearm.

On Wednesday, Sept. 23, Stepp called Detective Ross and said he would turn himself in the following day after speaking with his attorney.

On Thursday, Sept. 24, detectives spotted Stepp in a vehicle heading toward North Fort Myers, initiated a traffic stop and placed him under arrest.

Stepp's defense attorney, Matthew Hyder, argued there was "a whole lot more to this story."

Hyder said the other individuals involved were connected to a criminal gang, that Stepp's friend was allegedly knocked unconscious and that Stepp himself was also allegedly knocked unconscious, though he said that detail did not appear in the report.

Hyder also noted that Stepp had cooperated with investigators, had already hired an attorney and had arranged for a peaceful surrender before being stopped and arrested.

The attorney pointed out that Stepp was wearing two white shirts and two pairs of socks at the time of his arrest, arguing that showed he had prepared to go to jail and intended to turn himself in.

Hyder stressed he was not trying to litigate the full case at first appearance, only arguing the circumstances were more complicated than someone randomly firing a gun.

The judge adopted the state's requested bond amounts, setting Stepp's total bond at $284,000. The judge also ordered Stepp to surrender all firearms to the Cape Coral Police Department, have no contact with either alleged victim and stay away from designated locations.

His next court date is set for 8:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26 in Courtroom 8B.
