Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties issues States of Emergency over Dengue fever

TAMPA, Fla. (WINK) — The first reported dengue fever death out of Tampa has surrounding areas on high alert with more than 100 cases.

Three counties are now under a state of local emergency: Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas County. Lee county is lending a helping hand.

Hillsborough County accounts for 88% of the state's infections with 170 dengue cases. Between Sept. 13-19, the county logged 36 new cases.

In Pinellas County, seven cases were reported. Pasco saw two cases.

Polk County just reported its first case.

Here in Southwest Florida, there are no reported cases of dengue fever. Despite no signs of the deadly virus here, officials are taking proactive measures to prevent the spread.

Collier County Mosquito Control uses specialized traps to catch a certain type of mosquito known for carrying the virus. They explore the bug's DNA.

Lee County is sending three choppers and pilots with other staff to help Tampa tackle the dengue outbreak starting next week. You can also take steps to prevent any possible spreads.

Drain any standing water you see near or around homes and businesses to prevent mosquitoes laying eggs. If you can't drain the water, you can go to Collier County Control District and get mosquitofish for free.

They eat about 100 larvae a day. Always wear mosquito repellent when outdoors.
